The strategic dissemination of misinformation and the fomenting of mistrust are increasingly being used as weapons and threaten stability in Europe. In the summer school “Psychological Warfare: Controlling the Public”, the participants will deal with communication in and about the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine. Tactical communication, psychological influence, propaganda and attempts at manipulation will be discussed and evaluated. Participants will learn about the goals and mechanisms of psychological warfare, with a particular focus on the strategic use of social items in modern warfare. The political consequences and the impact on the mental health of the population are then examined. Participants will then deal with normative questions such as the general legitimacy of psychological influence. Finally, approaches to solutions are discussed and students talk about individual and collective protective measures. <\/p>\n\n

In addition to the academic discussion, the focus is also on the exchange with actors from the field. During the program, participants will interactively analyze case studies on psychological warfare and apply their new knowledge. The overarching goal of the summer school is to enable students to comprehensively understand and recognize the mechanisms of psychological influence in order to protect themselves and their societies from it in the future. <\/p>\n\n

After several successful performances in Mainz and Wiesbaden, the Ukrainian theater group “Demetrios” has now agreed to give another performance as part of the theme week. We cordially invite you to this theater performance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the middle of the war, four women wake up in a pitch-black cellar and have no idea how they got there or how they are supposed to get out again – or whether they even want to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on true stories about the horrors suffered by women during the war in Ukraine, “Closed Sky” is Ukrainian playwright Neda Nejdana’s remarkable and ultimately encouraging response to the Russian airstrike on the theater in Mariupol, which killed 600 people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The play will be performed in the original language (Ukrainian) with German subtitles. Admission is free, a donation for the amateur theater is requested. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

War brings information disorder, and even more so in the digital age. The information environment of hybrid warfare is rife with deliberately distorted media accounts, psychological operations, individual and group targeting, and surveillance, enabled through digital networks. Everyone’s news feed is boundless and ever-growing through clicking, swiping, linking, liking, commenting, and sharing. In this situation, socially interactive audiences need to make sense of the news and navigate the precarious environment while caring for themselves and their close others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent research shows that Ukrainian media audiences use a range of useful techniques to stay informed and sane, but their sense-making often depends on their social environment and has several “blind spots”. In this lecture, Olga Pasitselska will discuss findings from two focus group projects with Ukrainian audiences: before and after the full-scale invasion, in 2019 and 2023. In conclusion, she will share research-informed practical advice on how to improve and optimize one’s feed and media diet to prevent “war fatigue” and “mental burnout”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
